What is MRV?

MRV refers to the multi-step process to measure the amount of emissions reduced or removed by a specific mitigation or removal activity over a period of time and report these findings to an accredited third party. The third party then verifies the report so that the results can be certified and carbon credits can be issued.

Our methodology

The world’s first Gold Standard approved methodology for tech-based carbon removal was established by neustark. The methodology was published in 2022 in the Gold Standard methodology register.

Each credit under the Gold Standard-approved methodology represents the net removal of one tonne of CO₂. Avoidance credits cannot and will not be generated under this methodology.

Under this methodology, the use of fossil CO₂ is not allowed. It solely focuses on air-captured CO₂ and biogenic CO₂ from biomass.

The effective amount of CO₂ mineralized in recycled concrete is measured via flow meters, enabling full transparency about the process.

Also, economical additionality is assured as carbon credit revenue is the only source of income financing the whole value chain.

The process behind our MRV

Neustark has its impact verified on a yearly basis: we produce a comprehensive monitoring report of our source and storage sites and our cumulative storage performance. This is then thoroughly verified by Gold Standard: the process includes visits on-site to check our technology and CO₂ flow measurements, and a rigorous examination of all of our documents on our and our partners’ quality standards, amongst others.

Next to that, all of our projects, so our individual storage sites, are validated by Gold Standard. Here too, the process is thorough: we first draw up a project design document, then hold a stakeholder consultation. After a preliminary review, our project is validated by Gold Standard – and our design is reviewed by the Federal Office for the Environment in Switzerland (for Switzerland only, in other countries similar processes are being deployed).

What enabled neustark’s methodology to become the first-ever tech-based carbon dioxide removal solution was its environmental integrity, permanence and measurability of the solution.
